  Generosity Matters

"My kids used to be embarrassed by their brown skin and black hair. But now they are proud of themselves. They come to the museum and they see the exhibits, and they participate in Alutiiq activities in their school . . . they have learned to be comfortable with themselves. This isn’t easy in a world where television reminds us how different we are."

- An Alutiiq Mother -

  Pat Kozak

Pat Kozak caring for collections.
Pat Kozak opens a drawer in the Alutiiq Museum’s collections room.  The heavy metal shelf rolls quietly out of its slot, revealing an array of carved wooden objects.  Pat pauses to admire the ancient treasures, then sets about cushioning each in its own bed of soft foam and archival tissue paper.  Caring for items of Alutiiq heritage requires strong organizational skills, attention to small details, and patience.  It’s work Pat loves.

Over more than 4 years, Pat has volunteered as an Alutiiq Museum collections assistant. A member of the Mullan family of Afognak village, her Alutiiq heritage is an integral part of her life. Working with the museum’s collections is both satisfying and inspiring.  “I’m just so amazed with the things our ancestors did with what they had.  They made such beautiful things. They were very skilled.”

Why does Pat support the museum?   “There are no windows in the museum, but that doesn’t matter.  I get engrossed.  Pretty soon an hour or two goes by and my soul is filled up. I have the utmost respect for Sven and the entire group at the museum.  I feel grateful when I leave.  Like I’m making a difference.”  She is.

Generosity matters.

Please join the Pat in supporting the Alutiiq Museum.
Help the preservation continue.  Quyanaa.
