Sitka Mountain Ash

Sorbus sitchensis M. Roemer

Plant

The Sitka mountain ash is an aromatic shrub that produces clusters of small, white flowers and round, red fruits. This plant appears similar to Pacific red elder. Both plants have numerous long, narrow, indented leaflets extending from a single leaf stalk. Unlike the Pacific red elder, the Sitka mountain ash has flat-topped flower and berry clusters and firm wood. The Sitka mountain ash occurs only in northern Kodiak region, where it is uncommon.

Food: A few people pick the berries for jam.

Medicine: The juice of Sitka mountain ash berries can be used to treat a chest cold.
