Joe Nelly, of the Kodiak Area Native Association, has seen a similar bow in the possession of an elder from Kodiak Island, and II-A-1631 is similar to other bows he's seen in museum collections documented as coming from Kodiak or Prince William Sound. - SEH 4/1994

Sinew-backed bow. Hardwood (yew?), narrowed and thickened at the handle. Backing consists of a group of braided sinew cords, wrapped with a spiral of braided cord, stopped down to the bow on either side of the handle, hooked around the nocks with more cords coming in at three areas near the ends. At one end, it is not hooked around the nock, but it is not clear if this is intentional of if it was cut. At that end, the bow has a complete reverse curve; at the other end it curves down with a piece of wood set on the back under the cord and lashed down with black thread. Forms an S-shaped curved bow.
