Length: 35"
19th century
Alaskan Pacific Rim, Alaska (possibly Prince William Sound) (attributed), late 19th century (attributed), Unangax or Alutiiq/Sugpiaq (attributed). Purchased from Jonathan Holstein, New York, New York. Rectangular column-shaped wooden quiver split lengthwise into two pieces, bound together by either string or sinew wrappings in three places – once near the flat base, then 29.7cm above the base and again 22.1cm below the top. The piece is painted with seven horizontal, blue-bordered black bands separated by red-painted areas. The wrappings are incorporated in these decorative bands and are heavily pigmented. The halves are tied together at the top by short multiple wrappings of commercial thread. The quiver swells out slightly near the top. The blue paint is on top of the black color; the second band from the bottom exhibits a major blue paint run. There is some paint loss. The quiver is part of a larger collection which includes a bow, four arrows, and a wooden quiver for hunting sea otters.
