This spruce root hat was jointly purchased by the Alutiiq Heritage Foundation and the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. It was originally collected in the late 19th century by Andrew Kashevaroff, an Orthodox Priest of Russian/Alutiiq decent. It was rediscovered in 1999 in the basement of Kashevaroff's granddaughter, Natasha Calvin, by a curator at the Alaska State Museum, where it was subsequently put on display under a loan agreement. Upon Calvin's death in 2004, her family decided to put it up for sale at Bonham's and Butterfield's, an auctioneer based in San Francisco.~root~>
