Alutiiq is one of five branches of what linguists call the Esk-Aleut language family, a group of related languages spoken from Kodiak to Greenland. Alutiiq is closely related to Central Yup’ik, the language of western Alaska. Alutiiq and Central Yup’ik share vocabulary and grammar, and speakers can understand each other. Alutiiq is distantly related to Unangam Tunuu, the language of the Aleutians Islands. Alutiiq and Unangam Tunuu speakers cannot understand each other but their languages have similar grammars.
