The nagoonberry is a small, herbaceous plant of open, dry, and moist habitats including tundra, bogs, meadows, and stream and lake shores. It is distinguished by pink flowers; sweet, red, raspberry-like fruit; and leaves typically divided into three deeply incised lobes.
Gathering: Nagoonberries, ripe in mid to late July, are easier to separate from their stems earlier in the season when they are firmer.
Food: Alutiiq people eat Nagoonberries fresh, make them into jams and jellies, and freeze them. They may be preserved in oil.
