Artist Services

Making a living as an artist is difficult. Artists put many hours and materials into their creations. For artists who want to sell their work, the creative process is the first step. They must also be able to navigate the art market. Every successful artist is also a business person, with the resources, knowledge, and connections to move from the studio to the marketplace. The Alutiiq Museum is here to help.

SUPPORTING LIVING CULTURE

The museum’s advocacy work is helping Native artists market their work with individualized support, community education, and enhancements to our store. We also maintain an Alutiiq arts authentication program—the Alutiiq Seal.

The Alutiiq Seal

LOOK FOR THE SEAL

The Alutiiq Seal is a mark of authenticity. When you see the seal emblem attached to a piece of artwork, you can be certain that it was crafted by an Alutiiq artist. Only Alutiiq artists registered with the Alutiiq Museum can use the logo.

Messages For Consumers

Alutiiq Museum Exhibit

Native artists face hurdles selling their work. Did you know that a large percentage of the Native-style artwork sold in the United States is made by non-Native people? This practice was outlawed by the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990 but fakes still make their way into stores and compete with genuine works for limited sales.

Alutiiq artists and community leaders are helping to build public awareness of the value of Native artwork and the importance of buying genuine works. Hear their messages.
