Medium: Beading, Glass Work

Rhonda Shelford Jansen

Kathy Johnson was born on Kodiak Island and raised in a family of Alutiiq and Tlingit heritage. Her Dad is from Larsen Bay and Karluk, and her mom from Cordova.

Kathy began beading as a teenager, learning from her mother and many others. She explored her interest in art with classes in stained glass. Saving scraps of glass led to the design of mosaics. She also enjoys working in fused glass.

For Kathy, art is an important form of personal and cultural expression.

My love for wildflowers and the sea reflects in my creations from fused glass fireweed and fused glass jelly fish to mosaic salmon and mosaic octopuses, to name a few. Many of the items I create have ties to cultural heritage.”

You can find examples of Kathy’s work at the Alutiiq Museum Store, at local bazaars, and in charity auctions. Kathy can also be found teaching in the Kodiak Arts Council’s Sum’arts program and at Kodiak College, where she shares stained glass mosaics techniques.
