Janelle Barton

Medium: Jewelry, Carving, Woodburning, Painting

Janelle Barton

Janelle Barton is a self-taught Alutiiq Artist who has been carving, painting, and creating jewelry for more than 12 years. She’s particularly inspired by Alutiiq rock art and incorporates ancestral petroglyphs in her work. She enjoys the challenge of creating beautiful things and the joy it brings to others.

She will begin a piece by beachcombing and collecting water-rounded rocks. These become necklaces, earrings, and keychains. In addition, Barton carves Alutiiq petroglyphs onto glass, including stemware and vases.

Barton is the daughter of Donna Katelnikoff-Yovino. She is the granddaughter of Sophie Katelnikoff-Shepard and the late Fred Katelnikoff Sr. Barton lives in Kodiak and sells her work through the Alutiiq Museum Store, local bazaars, markets, and social media. She supports local cultural activities by contributing to benefit.
