Medium: Carving and Metal Work
Jim Miller’s Yupik name is Ayalriitt, which means “the traveler-in a spiritual way” or “the one who goes”. A wood carver and a metal worker, Jim has been an arts instructor for Prince William Sound youth for over thirty years. He works in both traditional media – ivory, bone, and wood – as well as more contemporary materials like copper, brass, silver, and glass. Examples of his work are the permanent collections of the Pratt Museum and the Valdez Museum and Historical Archive.
Jim says, “I have worked for about thirty years as an addictions counselor and specialized in family treatment and community development. Personally and professionally I have used traditional art forms as a process of healing from the effects of historic trauma and multi-generational grief/loss.”
