Medium: Carving, Painting

Gary Knagin

In 2001, after a 25 year hiatus, Gary Knagin began to reexplore his interest in art.  In 2006, he traveled to France with a group of Alutiiq artists to study ancestral objects in the Pinart collection.  This experience transformed his carvings, which are now displayed in Native Corporations offices and and private homes in Kodiak, Anchorage, Seattle, Portland, Kona, Las Vegas, San Diego, Phoenix, Denver, and Ft. Lauderdale.

Gary Knagin was born in Kodiak, Alaska in 1957 to Dennis Knagin of Afognak Village and Julie Knagin of Karluk.  He lived in Afognak village till the age of 2, when his family moved to Kodiak.  After graduating from Kodiak high school he attended the Denver Automotive and Diesel College where he earned an Auto Body Technician Certification and won first place in a custom painting contest – his first artistic achievement.  He began exploring art again in 2001, as manager of the Dig Afognak camp.
