Jessie Herman-Haywood

Medium: Photography, Beading

Melissa Berns

Jessie Herman-Haywood is an Alutiiq artist who lives in Juneau, Alaska with roots in the Alexandria (Sasha) Kalmakoff family. Jessie sells her work online through Instagram. She named her business Ruby Rouser after her grandmother Ruby, Sasha Kalmakoff’s daughter.

Jessie is inspired by nature and spends as much time as possible outdoors. She had been taking photographs for a decade, capturing Alaska’s beauty with her camera. Jessie also likes to incorporate natural elements into her beading—the colors of the night sky, the shimmer of abalone shell, or the shapes of clouds and waves. She first learned to bead from her Tlingit step-grandmother Joey, when she was in elementary school. She began making beaded earrings two years ago and enjoys the creative outlet that creating jewelry provides.
