Cindy Pennington

Medium: Sewing, Jewelry Design

Annie May Peterson-Lewis

Cindy Pennington is the daughter Lucille Davis of Karluk and William Jager of Larsen Bay, Kodiak Island.

Cindy is a self-taught artist and loves to experiment in different mediums including fabrics, polymer clays, beads, and watercolor. She began crafting after working with Alaska Native artists at the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage, Alaska.

Other artists were very supportive of her work and encouraged Cindy to explore different ways of expressing her heritage. Creating art allows her to share her knowledge of Alutiiq culture with others. She hopes that through her art, the world can appreciate the culture, knowledge, and history of the Alutiiq people.

The items Cindy creates include dolls and doll clothing with Alutiiq motifs, seascape medicine bags, and necklaces of polymer clay and beads. She also makes “garden” art using teapots found at garage sales and second-hand stores, and creates Christmas tree skirts and garland using Alaska and Alutiiq motifs.
