Keelin Rice

Medium: Jewelry, Embroidery, Beadwork

Annie May Peterson-Lewis

Born in Virginia and raised in California, Keelin Rice is a Sugpiaq artist with deep family ties to the Kodiak Archipelago. Ancestral traditions and imagery inspire her work.

“My Sugpiaq friends and family inspire me to continue learning the different forms of art that help connect me to my ancestral roots. . . . being around them has encouraged me to push myself outside my comfort zone and do things I wouldn’t otherwise do.

Petroglyphs have also been a core source of inspiration for me, and I try to incorporate them into my art as much as possible. I enjoy art because of the way it challenges me to find new ways to connect with myself and with the Sugpiaq culture. It also gives me more agency to express myself in certain ways. For example, I was getting frustrated that I couldn’t find any petroglyph earrings to buy, so I taught myself how to make them and consequentially found a passion for recreating petroglyphs with beads and embroidery. The possibilities are endless, and it drives me to continue learning, always.”
