Natalia Schneider

Medium: Weaving, Skin Sewing, Beading

Natalia

Natalia Schneider is a Kodiak Alutiiq artist who has been immersed in traditional culture her entire life. She learned skin sewing and beading from her mother Teri Schneider and Elder Susan Malutin and weaving from Elder June Pardue. She recently learned to make decorative tassels, a fine weaving made around a wooden form used to adorn hats and parkas. Natalia is an active member of the Kodiak Alutiiq Dancers, for whom she coordinates events and creates regalia. She particularly enjoys making garments that can be used to help Alutiiq people express their culture.

Natalia says, “I thrive when I’m surrounded by people who want to learn their culture and with people who want to teach . . . I want to learn more so that one day I can teach the next generation of young people.”
