Rhonda Shelford Jansen

Medium: Painting, Photography

Rhonda Shelford Jansen

Rhonda is best known for her Alaska Native and nautical paintings that are inspired by her years in Homer, Kodiak, and Dutch Harbor and her family’s lineage in the Alaskan commercial fishing industry. Her Aleut (Unangan) heritage and her love for history are the foundation for her Native work.

She specializes in oils, acrylic, and watercolor—creating soft, natural scenes with rugged coastlines, waves, and mountains. She also sells photography specializing in architecture and abstract subjects.

Rhonda’s early interest in art was fostered by her Alaska Native grandmother Lydia Resoff Shelford, a self-taught expert in oils. She also studied under Alaskan artist Toby Tyler of Homer, Alaska, and at the University of Washington while majoring in business. She has taught art to youth, illustrated Alaska Sea Escapes; sells art online, in stores, and galleries; and does shows and commissions. She is listed in the Department of the Interior’s Indian Arts and Crafts Board Directory; has been featured in CIRI’s newsletter and on the Alaska Native Conservancy website under Native Voices, and is the featured artist for the Indian Health Board’s conference in the fall of 2020.
